Far East

Far East is an editorial series of the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc, published by Palacký University Press. Its aim is to promote the understanding of the cultures, languages, and intellectual traditions of the Far East and to make the results of scholarly research accessible to both domestic and international academic audiences.

The series is divided into two thematic lines: (1) Translations, and (2) Scholarly Studies.

1. Translations

This line focuses on translations of philosophical, literary, and other significant texts from the languages of the Far East. It introduces the Czech audience to works of classical and modern literature that have so far been only partially available in the Czech context. Publications in this line are for sale and distributed through standard book distribution networks.

Published works:

  • Ivo Pajorek: Mencius

2. Scholarly Studies

This line follows up on the scholarly journal Dálný východ (Far East), which was published by the Department of Asian Studies between 2011 and 2023. It provides a platform for presenting the latest research on the Far East, especially in linguistics, literary studies, history, philosophy, art, cultural anthropology, regional studies, and other humanities disciplines. Special attention is also devoted to publishing comprehensive collections of studies in foreign languages by prominent Czech and Slovak orientalists, thereby preserving and making their scholarly legacy more accessible internationally.
